Last week we were called to a home because their air conditioner was running constantly. Resident was concerned the thermostat (previously replaced) was not functioning properly and wanted another Nest to go with his Honeywell.
Prior to sending technician to site, I called as a courtesy for additional information (we always call as professional relationships and trust is important). While reviewing with resident, found out he changed several thermostats without resolve. He was getting quite frustrated.
Honey, it’s hot:
Home was reaching 78 degrees but would not cool below. Resident stated the system would not shut off, would not reach temperature desired, and was causing his energy bill to skyrocket.
Could it be?
- Low voltage wiring issue? Probably not
- Thermostat wired wrong or malfunctioning? I doubt it
- Refrigerant low? Without ice and with proper pressures, not likely
- Caked coil? Does not follow symptoms plus coil was clean
The real deal
- System old and unable to keep up? System born in 2004 so age may be playing a role
- Air conditioner running constantly due to being undersized? Sounds like we are close
Ultimately the two bedroom/two bath home was not cooling to comfort level because of the age and size of unit.
This home consisted of 1,343 square feet of living space. The design and layout required a 3-ton system but housed a 2.5 ton system.
Two days after our initial visit a new 3-ton system was installed. Resident called this morning with great news: home cooling at a comfortable 74 degrees with proper cycle times.
Bottom line: Before wasting money on an old and undersized system, have a trusted HVAC company evaluate your home and current air conditioner to ensure right sizing.
One more thing, old does not necessarily mean you need a replacement. For example, the system at our home was born in 2002 and is still running fine.
Call to action: Now is the right time to make sure your air conditioning system can handle the upcoming season. We’ll be glad to visit your location and perform a preventive maintenance (great specials right not) or service as required.
